Best Romantic Thrillers & Romantic Suspense Books

Best Romantic Thrillers & Romantic Suspense Books - book collage

Are you looking for a romantic thriller with a love story twisted up in danger? You’re in the right place! I’m Diana Urban, and I write about nerdy young women who get trapped in terrifying, stabby-stabby situations and might fall in love while fighting to survive.

Here are my favorite romantic thrillers to get you started (a few of them mine), for adult and teen readers alike. But first, because I get this question a lot, let’s dig into the difference between romantic thrillers and romantic suspenses.

Romantic thriller vs. romantic suspense — what’s the difference?

People often use these terms interchangeably, but here’s how I think about them:

  • Romantic thriller leads with the thriller and has a prominent romance plot. The mystery, twists, and survival plot drive the story, but the romance is heavy on the page as the heroine starts falling for someone who might also be the killer (or the next victim). The romance heats up alongside the threat, and every scene gets more swoony and nerve-wracking at the same time because nobody’s safety is guaranteed, including the couple’s. There still may be a HEA (happily ever after), but it’s not marketed as such, so you don’t know how things will wind up.
  • Romantic suspense leads with the romance and has a prominent thriller or mystery plot. The love story is the main plot while the danger is the obstacle, and you can count on a happy ending for the couple.

If you want a guaranteed happy ending, go for romantic suspense. But if you’d rather bite your nails wondering who makes it out alive and whether there truly will be a happily-ever-after, try a romantic thriller.

Note that there’s a ton of overlap in the market! If you search Amazon for “romantic suspense” lots of romantic thrillers will pop up, and vice-versa. It’s similar to how people debate whether a book is a “romantasy” or a “fantasy romance”; the market can’t seem to agree on what’s what!

Best romantic thrillers for adults (thriller-forward)

  • Verity by Colleen Hoover is lots of romance readers’ gateway to thrillers. It’s about a broke writer who takes a job finishing a bestselling author’s series and stumbles on a manuscript she was never meant to read, and she might fall for the author’s brooding husband while she lies bedridden upstairs. There’s forbidden-romance aplenty, along with this one jump scare that LITERALLY made me jump and I’ll never get over it. (Spoiler but: couch, stairs. IYKYK.)
  • You’re Overthinking This (mine!) is a steamy, snowbound locked-room thriller. A woman on the run from her ex crashes in a blizzard and shelters with a rugged, handsome stranger… then finds a dead woman in his freezer. She decides to seduce him so he won’t kill her, too, but when she falls for him for real, she has to figure out whether he did kill the woman downstairs. (It’s available for preorder now.)
  • Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera follows a woman who fled her Texas hometown after her best friend’s murder, which she can’t remember and may have committed. A hit true-crime podcast drags her back to face it, and the mystery kept me guessing till the end. There’s also a slow-burn, satisfying romance (with less steam than the other two, but I loved it!).

Want a free romantic thriller right now? Grab my short story The Last Time I Saw Her Alive. It’s a psychological thriller with forbidden romance and a gasp-out-loud twist, and is the perfect length to gulp down at lunch or right before bed. And it’s free when you join my newsletter!

Even spicier romantic thrillers

If you want even more spice with your thrills, these are more dark romance (check the content warnings first!); the sexy bits are sexier, the suspense is top notch, and BookTok is obsessed with these!

  • Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton is about a woman who inherits her dead grandmother’s creepy old manor and picks up a stalker who terrifies her and won’t let her go. It’s a dark romance entwined with a gothic, ghostly mystery. Warning: lots of noncon.
  • Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver is about two serial killers who only hunt other killers and fall for each other. It’s a twisted love story that plays out over an annual competition that pits them against the most dangerous killers in the country, so lots of great tension.
  • The Risk by S.T. Abby is part of the Mindf*ck Series, and it follows a woman who’s through a revenge kill list… but she falls for the FBI agent chasing her. Obsessed.
  • Lights Out by Navessa Allen is a stalker romance about a trauma nurse who’s into online masked-men thirst traps, then realizes the anonymous man she’s been watching has been watching her, too.

Best YA romantic thrillers

These mysteries are built around messy, complicated teenage relationships, with lots of thrills and romance.

  • Lying in the Deep (mine) is a romantic, Agatha Christie-esque mystery that traps a girl on a study-abroad cruise with her ex, a brooding boy she fake-dates to make her ex jealous, and a killer. This one verges on new adult territory with a college-aged cast.
  • A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson is part of a popular series about a teen who reopens a closed murder case with a slow-burn romance along the way.
  • Under the Surface (mine) is a romantic survival thriller: a girl and her friends go missing in the Paris catacombs, while aboveground, the boy she loves is desperate to find her.
  • One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus is about five kids who walk into detention but only four walk out. As they try to figure out how one of them died, a romance between the nerd and the bad boy complicates everything.
  • These Deadly Games (mine) is an intense, pulse-pounding thriller where a girl has to pick off her own friends one-by-one to save her kidnapped sisters’ life. There’s a romance subplot woven through the danger. (It’s free on KU!)

Best romantic suspense for adults (romance-forward)

  • Anything by Nora Roberts / J.D. Robb. Nora is a queen of romantic suspense. The Witness is a great entry point: a teenager fakes her own death to escape from the mob and resurfaces years later, hiding secrets from the small-town sheriff who’s falling for her. And she’s falling for him right back, even though trusting him could get her killed.
  • Anything by Sandra Brown. Another queen of romantic suspense, honestly. Her later standalones (Mean Streak, Lethal, Tailspin) have both steam and high-stakes danger, with polar-opposites forced together under deadly circumstances.
  • A Cold Dark Place by Toni Anderson is about an FBI agent hunting her sister’s killer teams up with a cybercrime expert hiding a dangerous identity, and it’s book one of a long series. It’s dark, intense, fast-paced, with a HEA every time.
  • Perilous Trust by Barbara Freethy is a second-chance romance with action-packed thriller stakes. A woman’s father is killed and a past one-night-stand (her father’s mentee) shows up to protect her. When someone attacks them, they go off-grid to figure out who killed her father, and steamy time awaits with a guaranteed pairing.

What is a romantic thriller?

A romantic thriller is a thriller first with a love story woven through the danger, where the suspense and romance build at the same time. The heroine might be falling for someone who might either be the villain or the next victim, and nobody’s safety or happiness is guaranteed, including the couple’s. A good romantic thriller keeps you turning the pages whether you showed up for the scares or kissing.

What's the difference between a romantic thriller and romantic suspense?

Romantic suspense leads with the romance, with the love story at the center and a happy ending guaranteed. A romantic thriller leads with the thriller, where the twists and survival plot drive the story and no outcome, including the relationship, is guaranteed.

Which of Diana Urban’s books are romantic thrillers vs. romantic suspense? (SPOILER ALERT)

*For now, I’m marketing this one as a romantic thriller because I don’t want to spoil the ending. Tricksy, tricksy.

What are the best romantic thrillers to start with?

Verity by Colleen Hoover is a popular entry point, and once it’s out, You’re Overthinking This will be a close comparison. If you’re looking for a teen read to start with (with more thrills than romance), try These Deadly Games first; it’s so fast paced it’ll get you out of any reading rut, and it has a heart-wrenching romance subplot.

Are there romantic suspense books for YA readers?

YA romantic suspense is a sparse category that tends to get lumped into the thriller genre, but it’s growing. Books that blur the line include Under the Surface and Lying in the Deep by me, and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. If you want more romance-forward YA with thriller stakes and a guaranteed happy ending, watch this space; I’m working on one right now!

Where should I start with Diana Urban's books?

Start with All Your Twisted Secrets for my breakout locked-room thriller (six teens locked in a room have to pick one of them to kill, or they all die, with a love triangle twisted up in the danger). Try These Deadly Games for the biggest thrills, Under the Surface for the most romance-forward story of those I’ve published so far, or my short story The Last Time I Saw Her Alive, which you get for free when you join my newsletter.
